The Hotel de l’Europe***

200 years of history

The oldest hotel in Grenoble

Place Grenette has always been and still remains today the main square of the city. Formerly, the square was the grain market of Grenoble, hence its name.

A few centuries later, in the 1800s, Place Grenette was modernized. Cafes, restaurants and small shops flourish. Built in 1820, the Hotel de l’Europe is the oldest hotel in the capital of the Alps.

Originally a horse-drawn carriage relay, all the high society of the time flocked to the Hotel de l’Europe. In the past, the ground floor of the establishment was a large restaurant much appreciated by Grenoble residents and travelers alike. Large receptions and dance evenings were organized there.

At the end of the 19th century, a period of great industrial and demographic growth, the cabs and omnibuses set up a century earlier were no longer sufficient. Thus in 1897, Place Grenette welcomed the terminus of the first tramway in Grenoble.

The Hotel de l’Europe follows the movement and is also modernized. At the end of the 19th century, it was equipped with the very first hydraulic lift in the city, which made it one of the flagship addresses in Grenoble.
Throughout the ages, the Hotel de l’Europe has kept its style and the typical charm of the beginning of the century.
